Audley coat of arms. Motto, Je le tiens.

by Catton, Charles/Chesham

Audley Heraldry antique print. Coat of arms, motto Je le tiens. (I hold it.)

Original copperplate engraving by draughtsman, etcher, line and aquatint engraver Francis Chesham (1749-1806) from a drawing by Charles Catton (1756-1819) for The English Peerage printed on hand-laid paper and published in London circa 1790. The fine later hand-colour certainly adds to the appeal of this wonderful image of two wyverns with coat of arms between them, surmounted by a crown and battle helmet on top surmounted by a swan - with crown or helmet.

This series of coats of arms was published two to a page, one above the other. This half-page engraving has been mounted between antique-white ragmat conservation board, with the window of the upper mount surrounded by complimentary black and red lines. It has been cellophaned for protection until framed. Image within window measures 110 mm x 175 mm (4.25 x 7 inches). External measurement for frame window is 240 x 305 mm (9 1/2 x 12 inches). (Approximate - pease ask for exact measaurements.)
