Original copperplate-engraved mezzotint c1760 by Filippo Morghen after a drawing by Niccolo Vanni for the most important 18th century archaeological documentation of excavations at Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Stabiae (Campania)... hundreds of years after the region was covered when Mt Vesuvius erupted in AD79. With patronage of King Charles II, published in Naples between 1757 and 1792, with fine later hand-colour.
Paper slightly stretched during printing from engraved plate. This engraving is mounted between 'antique white' conservation rag mat board, and covered with cellophane for presentation and protection. Approximate size: 29 x 34cm (11.5 x 13.5 inches). Engraving window size, 13 x 18cm (5 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches)
