Putti fresco at Pompeii fresco. 18th century engraving from a charming series of Putti at Work and Play.
Original copperplate-engraved mezzotint c1757 by Rocco Pozzi after a drawing by Francesco Lavega for the most important 18th century documentation of discoveries from archaeological excavations at Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Stabiae (Campania), - hundreds of years after the region was covered when Mt Vesuvius erupted in AD79. With patronage of King Charles II, this delightful engraving was published in Naples circa 1760 (with later hand-colour).
It is currently mounted between 'antique white' conservation rag mat board, and covered with cellophane for protection. Engraving to plate mark: 11 x 16cm. Mounted window size 13 x 18cm (5 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches). External size for frame window is 29 x 34cm (11.5 x 13.5 inches).
