Original mezzotint c1760, engraved on a copper plate by Roccus Pozzi after a drawing by Francesco Lavega, for the most important eighteenth century documentation of the archaeological excavations at Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Stabiae (Campania) on the Bay of Naples, which had been covered by lava since Mt Vesuvius erupted in AD79. Published in Naples between 1757 and 1792 under the patronage of King Charles II.

This small image has been mounted in conservation board, and covered with cellophane for protection. External measurement for frame window is 29 x 34cm (11 3/8 x 13 3/8 inches). Engraving window size is 13 x 18cm (5 1/8 x 7 inches)
