With fine later hand-colour, this small copperplate mezzotint was engraved by Antonio Aloja after a drawing by Niccolo Vanni for the most important archaeological publication of the 18th century - published in Naples between 1757 and 1792, with the patronage of King Charles II - to record excavated discoveries at Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Stabiae (Campania), the region that had been buried since the eruption of Mt Vesusius late in 79 CE.

This lovely engraving has been mounted between antique white ragmat conservation board and covered with cellophane for presentation and protection until frame selection.
External measurement for a frame is 23 x 35cm (9 x 13 3/4 inches). The image window measures 11 x 23cm (4 1/4 x 9 inches).
