Henry Moses engraving of Giovanni Battista Piranesi vase. Piranesi was a skillful artist, engraver, etcher and stonemason. His diligence in restoring ancient artifacts that he found around Rome, as well as his skill in etching their images, were recognized when he was elected honorary Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London in 1757 and was awarded the Order of the Spur by Pope Clement XIII in 1766.

Henry Moses engraved "the most esteemed monuments of ancient times, as would tend to improve the judgement, and refine the taste of the Student.." (of antiquities). Moses considered that of all antiquities, Vases have provided the most admiration because of their variety, elegance of form, unusual designs, and beauty of the compositions that adorn them with interesting depictions of life and beliefs in the period represented.
