Framed Coat of Arms. Anthony Ashley Cooper. c1764.

by Edmonson, Joseph

Coat of Arms antique print. Anthony Ashley Cooper.

Original copperplate Heraldry engraving for Joseph Edmonson, who superbly depicted the Coats of Arms of Nobles and Peers of the Realm, with their rights and titles decoratively inscribed below their family crests with mottos. Published in London circa 1764 for Baronagium Genealogicum; or Pedigrees of the English Peers, Deduced from the Earliest Times: Originally Compiled by Sir William Segar, and continued to the Present Time.

Edmonson was inspired to study heraldry and genealogy after his apprenticeship as a coach-painter involved painting coats of arms on carriages. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and in March 1764 was created Mowbray Herald Extraordinary in the College of Arms. For many years he continued his successful business painting coaches, as well as being employed by the nobility in the compilation of their genealogies. His extravagant lifestyle left few assets for his son who continued as coach-painter until he died, soon after his father's death in 1786.

This engraving has been beautifully framed, and is on display at Brsibane Antique Emporium in Clayfield until sold.
External gilt frame measures 62 x 42cm (24 3/8 x 16 1/2 inches). Plate size around 54 x 33cm (21 1/4 x 13 inches).
