A Visitor of Importance, Animal Regatta antique print c1911.

by G.H. Thompson

Big Bears and Hippos watch Important Little Fox. Animals watching the people visiting the Regatta.

Original woodcut by G.H. Thompson for The Regatta in Animal Land by Clifton Bingham published circa 1911 by Ernest Nister of London and E.P. Dutton of New York. This is a wonderful antique lithograph with later hand-colour.

German publisher, Ernest Nister, printed lithographic books, first in Germany and then in London from 1888. He specialized in high quality printing for children's books around the turn of the century and the wonderful character artist, G.H. Thompson began doing watercolours for him. Thompson specialized in depicting animals with human characteristics, in human situations; and he even wrote early children's books himself. Thompson's attention to fashions of the day and the individuality and attitude of each animal is brilliantly and amusingly portrayed.

Page size is 225 x 375mm.
