Que vous etes belle Maman. (You are beautiful Mummy) c1922

by Gazette du Bon Ton

Evening gown and girl's dress by Jeanne Lanvin. Robe du soir et robe d'enfant, de Jeanne Lanvin.

Antique original-coloured pochoir by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) for the Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), published in Paris in 1922. The finest fashion illustrators of the day portrayed the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Brissaud was one of four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical. This original pochoir provides a charming fashion narrative of a privileged lifestyle of the period.

Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast. The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been adopted worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with a separate stencil cut for each application of watercolour.
