Coleoptera Cicindela Beetles, antique engraving for The Cyclopaedia; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature by Abraham Rees published between 1812 and 1820.

Original copperplate engraving by Milton c1813 with later hand colour, for The New Cyclopaedia published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown of Paternoster Row, London beteween 1802 and 1820. Abraham Rees worked for many long years as a reviser of Chambers’ Encyclopaedia. Between 1802 and 1820 Rees produced a completely original, finely illustrated work, using the finest artists and experts in each field. Comprising seven large volumes with over 240 copperplate engravings of both famous and unusual subjects in each volume, it was illustrated with superb images that were usually several to a page. It was the most extensive, the most comprehensive and the best illustrated encyclopaedia of the early 19th century.

The copperplate engravings were filled to their borders, barely fitting the cut size for publication. The size of this image is 265 x 200 mm (10.5 x 8 inches)
