Richard Lydekker, BA, FRS (1849-1915), was an English naturalist, geologist, palaeontologist, author and Fellow of the RoyalSociety who contributed greatly to British knowledge of a wide range of natural history sciences for more than 30 years.
Alfred Brehm's lithographic illustrations were mainly based on the watercolours of German artist, Robert Kretschmer (1812-1872). An eminent German zoologist and well-travelled writer, Brehm was the first director of the Zoological Garden of Hamburg, where he had a wide access to exotic wildlife.
