Original engraving by R. Benning (active 1714-1746) after a drawing by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770), for The Natural History of Barbados "by the Reverend Mr. Griffith Hughes, A.M., Rector of St. Lucy's Parish, in the said Island and F.R.S."

Parson, Griffith Hughes (1707-1758), was a Welsh naturalist and author who, in 1736 was appointed rector of St. Lucy's in Barbados - and remained there for over 12 years. He visited England in 1743, met with many leading scientists in London, and promoted his ideas for his publication before he returned to Barbados. Reverend Hughes was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1748, and received both a B.A. and M.A. from St John's, Oxford. The renowned botanical artist, George Dionysius Ehret produced 12 of the 29 plates for the publication; geographer to the Prince of Wales, Thomas Jefferys, produced the map of Barbados; and Philip Miller (1691-1771), (Ehret's brother-in-law) and head of the Chelsea Physic Garden from 1722 to 1770, wrote explanatory notes of all botanical and technical terms for the work. The Natural History of Barbados was Dedicated to Martin Folkes Esquire, President of the Royal Society, and published in 1750 - completely paid for by an impressive list of subscribers, with many royalty, including the King.
