Original hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Darly & Edwards, for “The British Herbal: an History of Plants and Trees, Natives of Britain, cultivated for use or raised for Beauty” published in London circa 1756 by John Hill M.D. (1716-75)

John Hill was endowed with the order of Vasa by the King of Sweden. This knighthood was subsequently recognized by George III of England. Described as ‘a man of real ability and genius’, Hill was a talented writer, and worked as a pharmacist, botanist, landscape architect and gardener (at both Kew Gardens and Kensington Palace), and also found time to be an actor!
