Maund Poinsettia pulcherrima. Most beautiful Poinsettia. Antique engraving c1837

Maund Poinsettia pulcherrima. Most beautiful Poinsettia. Antique engraving c1837

by Maund, Benjamin

A beautiful illustration of the Mexican species of the familiar Poinsettia genus with its red bracts and little yellow central flowers. The uncoloured flower dissections and foliage accentuate the fine engraving of this lovely work. The fine paper has once again taken up the ink from the engraved opposite page, and there is slight soiling in two areas at the lower left of the plate.

Original hand-coloured steel engraving for “The Botanist” published in London circa 1837 by pharmacist, botanist, printer, bookseller and fellow of the Linnean Society (1827), Benjamin Maund (1790-1863), assisted by Reverend Henslow, Dean of Botany at Cambridge. Maund's noteworthy publications were the "Botanic Garden" and "The Botanist".
