Narcifsus pleno flore, Narcifs. Indicus flore rubro. c1641.

by Johann DeBry/Matthaus Merian

Beautiful Narcissus botanical engraving by Merian after DeBry.

Stunning later hand-colour on this 17th century copperplate engraving after Johann Theodor De Bry (1561-1623) for his Florilegium Novum, first published in Oppenheim, Germany circa 1612. This enlarged edition was engraved and published by his son-in-law in 1641 as Florilegium Renovatum et Auctum.

This beautiful botanical engraving was by Johann DeBry (who was not a botanist and engraved many of his plates directly from the work of Pierre Vallet (1575-1657), with a few alterations (engraved directly from previous illustrations so the images are also reversed). DeBry also used botanical illustrations of Basilius Besler (1561-1629) and Crispijn Van Der Passe the younger (1594-1670) - once again altering the detail only slightly.

DeBry worked with his son-in-law, engraver Matthaus Merian (1593-1650). and his work was so successful that this enlarged edition, Florilegium Renovatum et Auctum was published in Frankfurt in1641 by Merian. Merian's engraved plates were also included circa 1770 in Requeil de Plantes dessinées et gravées anciennement a Francfort.

Page size 34 x 21cm (13 3/8 x 8 1/4 inches). To plate mark measures 260 x 165mm (10 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches).
