Pecans: San Saba, Centennial, Jewett, Frotscher, Pabst, lithograph c1904
by Heiges, Bertha
Pecans Antique Print, showing shells and halved nuts.
Original colour-printed lithograph by Bertha Heiges, commmissioned by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to produce this illustration for the USDA Yearbook, published by Sackett & Wilhelms Lithographing and Printing Company, Brooklyn, New York in 1904.
Scientifically accurate paintings were used to create lithographs between 1886 and 1942 to illustrate U.S.D.A. bulletins, yearbooks, and other printed publications to inspire growers across America. The majority of colour-printed lithographs were published between 1894 and 1916. Most of the accomplished botanical artists were women as art was considered acceptable as a female pursuit, and government illustrator was one of the few employments available to women artists.
