Hand-coloured engraving of Pigeons. Oliver Goldsmith c1850.
by Goldsmith, Oliver
Antique print of Pigeons c1852.
Original hand-coloured steel engraving for Oliver Goldsmith’s “A History of the Earth and Animated Nature”, published in London circa 1848-1852 by A. Fullarton & Company. Copperplate engravings were published in London in 1774 for “A History of the Earth and Animated Nature” by Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774). The ongoing popularity of this work was attributable to the fine stylized hand-coloured illustrations. Goldsmith aimed to bring together all that was known about the planet, earth, plants, animals and human inhabitants. His efforts proved to be a popular source of reference material on nature during Victorian times, and Goldsmith’s Animated Nature was republished many times until 1826. The earliest were hand-coloured copperplate engravings, but as the population and demand for images grew, printing from engraved steel plates enabled the repeated pressure of larger print runs without losing the finely engraved definition on each plate.
