Original hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Manceau from a drawing by Edward Travies. The minute precision of Edouard Travies' work places him with the best of France's scientific artists. His bird illustrations are considered to be some of the finest ever produced. This exquisite engraving is from a 'new' edition of the 'Complete works of Buffon, following the classification of Cuvier, Lesson etc.' Oeuvres complètes de Buffon, suivies de la classification comparee de Cuvier, Lesson etc. Published in Paris circa 1837 by the Pourrat Brothers (Pourrat Freres).

Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin.
