Fine original hand-coloured steel engraving by eminent Edinburgh engraver W.H. Lizars (1788-1859) for Jardine's Naturalist’s Library series on Gallinaceous (Game) Birds published circa 1840 by Sir William Jardine.
Eminent painter and engraver, William Home Lizars (1788-1859) was born and educated through high school in Edinburgh. He assumed his father's business commitments following Daniel Lizars's death, and between 1833 and 1843 W.H. Lizars engraved most of the 30 to 40 steel plates from the drawings by leading naturalists for each of the 40 works for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, which was a comprehensive series on all manner of fauna.
Mounted in antique white conservation mattboard and covered in protective cellophane ready for framing. Engraving size: 7 x 4.5 inches or 18 x 11cm. External mount size: 11.5 x 8.5 inches or 29 x 22cm.
