Original wood engraving by Karl Gustav Ernst Specht (1852-1937) after the drawing by his brother, wildlife artist and illustrator, Friedrich Specht (1839-1923), for The Royal Natural History by Richard Lydekker FRS, FGS, FZS, (1849-1915). Published by Frererick Warne & Co. of London & New York c1896 (with later hand-colour). Lydekker edited the text and adapted the illustrations of Illustrirtes Tierleben (Illustrated Animal Life) by Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884); first published in Leipzig between 1864 and 1869 and republished in Austria as Brehm's Tierleben, between 1894 and 1896.
This engraving, on fine paper of the period, is in good condition. It is half-framed - mounted between antique white conservation ragmat boards and covered with cellophane for protection until framed. The image measures approximately 7 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches (190 x 165mm). The external size for frame window measures 39 x 33cm (15 1/4 x 13 inches)
