Original hand-coloured woodblock engraving c1857 by Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917), printed by the most accomplished of the 19th century woodblock printers, Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893), for English amateur ornithologist, the Reverend Francis Orpen Morris, B.A. (1810-1895).
F.O. Morris was a founder of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and a Member of the Ashmolean Society. A History of British Birds, published in London by Groombridge and Sons of Paternoster Row became the most popular bird book of the Victorian era in Britain. F.O. Morris wrote the text forthe books which were financed and printed by Fawcett and illustrated by Frank Lydon.
