John Gould Buteo melanosternon Australian Buzzard antique print.

Original hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and Henry Constantine Richter for Gould's “Birds of Australia ” published in London between 1840 and 1848 by John Gould (1804-1881), who was known as The Bird Man.

From the age of 26, John Gould spent over 50 years publishing grand works on families of birds, and birds from different regions of the world. Gould was a respected ornithologist, a discerning artist, and a successful businessman. He obtained subscribers’ funds prior to each work, and while apparently very demanding, he paid his staff well. Gould was greatly assisted by his artist wife Elizabeth Gould (1804-1841), who learnt lithography from the great parrot artist, Edward Lear. She refined many of her husband’s drawings of birds, and lithographed more than 600 – until she died following the birth of their eighth child after their return from Australia to England in 1840.

In good condition, with beautiful hand-colour, the digital photo does not do this lithograph justice. The size of the page is as issued:  535 x 370 mm (21 x 14.5 inches.)
