by Jones, Inigo

Whitehall Palace Pavilion near the Park, antique print. Inigo Jones Elevation and Floorplan.

Original rare copperplate engraving by Paul Fourdrinier (1698-1760) from a drawing by Henry Flitcroft (1697-1769), of 'Ignatius Iones Architectus' (Inigo Jones architecture) - among neo-classical architectural designs of great British architects. Greatly inspired by Palladian architecture in Italy, Inigo Jones (1573-1652), believed strict mathematical proportion should control plan, elevation and all structure. Inigo Jones was the first to introduce classical Italian Renaissance architecture to Gothic Britain, and is considered to be the 'father of classical English architecture'.

Fourdrinier was born in the Netherlands and trained in Amsterdam. A fine general engraver, based at Charing Cross in London, Fourdrinier became best known for his superb architectural engravings for many of Britain's leading architects.
The son of a labourer in the employ of William III, in the gardens of Hampton Court Palace, Flitcroft was born in Twickenham, . was apprenticed to a joiner, and worked as a carpenter at Burlington House - until he fell from a scaffold, broke his leg, and came to the attention of Lord Burlington who became his patron and managed his training as an architect. 'Burlington Harry' became Master Carpenter in 1746-1748, and then Deputy Surveyer, before suceeding Thomas Ripley as Comptroller of the Works.
