Burlington Architectus. Royal Palace, Whitehall. Elevation and Floorplan, c1725

by Jones, Inigo

Royal Palace, Whitehall. Pl.19v2  c1725. The classical architecture designed by Inigo Jones for the Royal Palace, Whitehall. (The main London royal residence from 1530 to 1698, this palace with over 1,500 rooms was the largest palace in Europe when, except for the Banqueting House, it was destroyed in the great fire of London in 1698.)

Original copperplate engraving circa 1725 by Henrik Hulsbergh after a drawing by Henry Flitcroft of an architectural design by Inigo Jones (1573-1652).

The first to introduce classical Italian Renaissance architecture to Gothic Britain, Jones believed strict mathematical proportion should control plan, elevation and all structure.

With later hand-colour, this engraving is in good condition. Page size is 35 x 50cm (13.3/4 x 19.3/4 inches). Size to plate mark is 25 x 38cm (9.5/8 x 15 inches).
