Extinct Mascarene Islands Water Birds antique print c1878.

by M. & N. Hanhart

Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, Seychelles extinct Indian Ocean birds. (From along the submerged ridge of the Seychelles-Mauritius Plateau.)

Extinct birds are a congenial subject to embellish the text of George Rowley's Ornithological Miscellany published in London between 1875 and 1878.

This wonderful medley of 4 birds flying above 8 others is reprinted from a 17th century engraving by Herman Weyen (1625-1672) (Flemish, who worked in Paris), after a drawing by French artist, engraver and publisher, Henri le Roy (1579-? active until 1651)... It would look wonderful hung with the previous item.

In fair condition, with slight extremity soiling, extending inwards down right edge. Measuring 245 x 315mm (9 5/8 x 12 3/8 inches). To the border of image measures 12 x 19mm (4 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches).
