Original fine hand-coloured steel engraving by Edinburgh engraver William Home Lizars (1788-1859) for Sir William Jardine’s Naturalist’s Library’ 'Gallinaceous Birds' in the series of Ornithology, printed in Edinburgh circa 1840 by W.H. Lizars. The small beautifully coloured engravings of birds by Lizars are considered by many to be the most exquisitely engraved and coloured miniature portraits of birds that have ever been done.

The paper of these small engravings is usually age-discoloured (to be expected when over 180 years old). In addition to this there is light soiling on the ground above the title. Page size is 168 x 105mm (6.5/8 x 4.1/8 inches).

(This price is with the engraving mounted between 'antique-white' rag matt conservation board & covered in cellophane for protection and presentation. The external measurement for framing is 28 x 22cm (11 x 8.6 inches).
