Original hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Manceau after Edouard Travies published in Paris circa 1820 for 'Suites a Buffon. Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaiux', Buffon's work, updated by Bernard Germain Etienne de la Ville sur Illon, Comt e Lacepede (1756-1825). The minute precision of Edouard Travies' work places him with the best of France's scientific artists; his bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced. Engraving size is (18 x 10cm (7 x 4 inches).

Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 - April 16, 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin.

Mounted with 'antique white' boards and covered with cellophane for protection. External measurement for framing is 27 x 34cm (10.6 x 13.4 inches).
