John Gould Hemipodius Velox, Swift-Flying Hemipodius Button-Quail antique print.

Original hand-coloured lithograph by John and Elizabeth Gould for “Birds of Australia ”, the finest series of Australian Birds illustrations ever done. Published by John Gould in London between 1840 and 1848.

John Gould (1804-1881) was known as the Bird Man, and this wonderful series of the birds of Australia certainly did much to earn him this reputation. A brilliant ornithologist who devoted his life to the study of birds, Gould knew his limitations as an artist, and with his fine eye for detail, employed the best bird lithographers of the day, and closely monitored their work. Whilst most people have heard of John Gould, many are unaware that his artist wife Elizabeth Gould (1804-1841) produced many of the early drawings from the time of their marriage in 1829 until her death at the age of 37, following the birth of their eighth child, after their return to England from Australia.

This lovely Gould illustration of Australian quails has considerable faint foxing marks across the page. The price has been adjusted accordingly. Full size is 370 x 535mm (14.5 x 21 inches), as published.
