Original copperplate engraving by Van Maelle for Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola's "Rules of the Five Orders of Architecture" published in Paris circa 1778. First published in Rome in 1563 for Regole della Cinque Ordini d'Architettura (Rules of the Five Orders of Architecture) was written by the important Italian architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573) who based his Five Orders on the 10 volume work on architecture and building methods De Architectura written in the 1st century by Roman architect and engineer, Marco Vitruvius Pollio (known as Vitruvius) who dedicated his work to his patron Caesar Augustus. Barozzi's influential work was published in a number of languages over hundreds of years.
