A Pupil of La Haute Ecole. Portrait by Velasquez c1874.

by Cassell

Antique print after the painting by Velasquez, of Don Balthazar, 'Infante of Spain' , who is shown as a pupil of La Haute Ecole, the "high school"  of equestrian instruction, denoting that the riding school strove to develop a horse's natural talents, its mental and physical abilities, and to establish discipline and understanding in relationships and interaction with a horse.

Original colour-printed lithograph by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, for Samuel Sidney’s “The Book of the Horse” printed by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co of London, Paris and New York circa 1874.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the quality of chromolithographic illustrations for publication was exceptional. The lithographs for Cassells Book of the Horse are some of the finest illustrations that have ever been printed of horses.

Image measures approximately 22 x 17 cm (8 ¾ x 6 ¾ inches). Page size is 27 x 21cm (10 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches). Top left corner has a tiny fold, otherwise this antique print of a famous oil painting is in good condition.
