Smooth St. Bernard "Monarque". Walsh antique print c1878

by A. Baker

Antique print of Mr. Macdona's Smooth St. Bernard "Monarque".

Original wood engraving circa 1878 (with later fine hand-colour). Engraved by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published in 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888).

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. He was passionate about dogs and was an expert in their management and the treatment of their illnesses. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was a most respected publication and the illustrations have always been collected. A passionate sportman, Walsh became a sporting writer, and wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
