Original wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a drawing by L. Wells for "The Dogs of the British Islands" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888).
Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. A passionate sportsman, he became a sporting writer, and wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was reissued a number of times through to 1886. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
