Mr Vero Shaw's White English Terriers. antique print c1878

by A. Baker

Antique print of White English Terriers c1878.

Original wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888). Most of the excellent illustrations for this publication were given an appropriate background, that adds considerably to the charm of each dog portrait.

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. A passionate sportman, he became a sporting writer, and wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”.  He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was reissued a number of times through to 1886. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
