Mr Vero Shaw's Bull Dogs "Smasher" and "Sugar" antique print c1878.

by A. Baker

Lovely antique print of Bull Dogs, Smasher and Sugar.

Original hand-colored wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888). Most of the excellent illustrations for this publication were given an appropriate background, that adds considerable charm to each animal study.

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. His passion was field sport, and as a sporting writer, he wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”.  He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was reissued a number of times through to 1886. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
