Antique print of Modern Cocker Spaniels.- Mr. Gillett's "Brush" and "Nellie" , and Mr. W. Langdale's "Ladybird".
Original wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after the drawing A Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888). Many of the excellent dog illustrations for this publication were shown against appropriate backgrounds, and the engravings have always been collected. This popular publication was reissued a number of times through to 1886, with slight variation to the page size.
Walsh was well-educated, and practised for some years as a surgeon. He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. His passion was field sport, and as a sporting writer he wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
