Original wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath from a drawing by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888).

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. A passionate sportman, he became a sporting writer, and wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”.  He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was reissued a number of times through to 1886. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
