Dalmatian Dog "Captain". Walsh antique print c1878

Sold

by A. Baker

Dog portrait. Antique print of Mr. Fawdry's Dalmation Dog "Captain".

Original hand-colored wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a drawing by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888). Most of the excellent illustrations for this publication were given an appropriate background, that adds considerable charm to each animal study.

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. His passion was dogs and he was an expert in their management and the treatment of their illnesses. Walsh loved field sport and became a sporting writer - writing many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
