IL SAJOU BRUNO. (The Brown Capucine Monkey). Hugues, c1823
by Jacob, Nicolas Henri
Wonderful early, rarely-seen stipple engraving of Capucine Monkey.
Fine folio-size stipple-engraved copperplate by Luigi Rados after the drawing by Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871) for Pietro Hugues's Storia Naturale delle Scimie e dei Maki (Natural History of Monkeys and Maki (Lemurs)), an important 19th century monograph on primates, published in Milan by Pietro Hugues, with fine hand-colour on cream-coloured high quality wove paper. It would be hard to find something with more character!
As is to be expected there is age-discoloration around the extremities of the paper. There is also slight soiling and a couple of bends beyond the framing window - well beyond the intaglio impression. Otherwise, considering they are over 200 years old, they are in fine condition. Please enquire if you would like further images.
Height of paper should be 48cm (For some reason this plate was cropped at the base to 44cm). Paper width is 32.5cm. To the plate mark measure 31 x 21cm.
