Rare 18th century stipple engraving with contemporary hand-colour by Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) for Histoire Naturelle des Singes et des Makis Peintres d’apres Nature (Natural History of the Monkeys and Lemurs Painted after Nature) published in Paris circa 1799.

As often happens with early natural pigments, the strong natural colour has oxidized to the back of the page and there is offsetting from the adjacent image. There is also slight foxing and age-discolouration of the page - all of which emphasize the age of this superb engraving.

The intaglio impression of the engraving plate is almost at the edge of the page. Page size is 545 x 360mm (approximately 21.5 x 14.25 inches)
