Small hand-coloured copperplate engraving by R. P. Nodder for George Shaw's Naturalist’s Miscellany; Or, Coloured Figures of Natural Objects Drawn & Described Immediately from Nature – by Georgius Shaw, Fredericus P. Nodder.

Most of the 1,064 illustrations of animals, birds, insects, crustaceans, fishes, marine life and microscopic creatures for the 24 volumes of George Shaw's Naturalist's Miscellany were drawn, engraved and published by Frederick Nodder's family. Frederick’s wife, Elizabeth Nodder, assisted Shaw in compiling this enormous work, and is credited as publisher on the volumes after 1801. The distinctive hand-coloured engravings of Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751-1801) were continued after his death by his son, Richard Polydore Nodder (1774-1823), who was botanic artist to Queen Charlotte (husband of George III), and signed his work RN. RPN or R.P. Nodder. Both F.P. Nodder and R.P. Nodder exhibited at the Royal Academy and were royal painters to King George III.
