New Holland Goatsucker or Crested Owlet-Nightjar. Phillip's Journal c1789.

by Mazell, Peter

Antique Print of Australian Goatsucker, Aegotheles cristatus.

Original hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Peter Mazell after English ornithologist John Latham (1740-1837), for Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island printed in London by John Stockdale, the year after the successful establishment of the new colony at Sydney Cove. The account was illustrated, mostly after drawings and specimens sent back to London by Surgeon General John White. Phillip's Account was published in two states, one with the plates uncoloured, and another (a deluxe edition with very few copies) with hand-coloured illustrations. The engravings were by Peter Mazell, Thomas Medland, Prattent, and Sydenham Teast Edwards, after drawings by Ann Latham (1772-1835), daughter of English ornithologist John Latham, R.Cleveley and D. Butler.

Arthur Phillip came to Australia as captain of the convict ship, HMS Sirius and was appointed Captain General and Commander in Chief over the Territory of New South Wales.
