Wonderful RP Nodder early illustration of Australian Jackass - with wonderful laughing bird call.

Hand-coloured copperplate engraving for George Shaw and William Elford Leach's The Zoological Miscellany... descriptions of new, or interesting animals... illustrated with coloured figures, drawn from nature by R.P. Nodder, published in London in 1815 by Elizabeth Nodder & Son.

Elizabeth Nodder assisted her husband with publishing, while Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751-1801) was the (previous) principal artist for George Shaw. Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751-1801) completed most of the 1,064 distinctively styled hand-coloured engravings of all kinds of animals for George Shaw's Naturalist's Miscellany. After Nodder died, his son Richard Polydore Nodder (1774-1823) continued his tradition, while F.P. Nodder's wife assisted George Shaw in compiling and publishing this enormous work, illustrated by characteristic Nodder figures and strong colour. Both F.P. Nodder and his son R.P. Nodder exhibited at the Royal Academy and were royal painters to King George III. R.P. Nodder was also botanic artist to Queen Charlotte, the King's consort.

This original antique print is framed with a distinctive complimentary styled gilt-edged cracked gesso mount and poplar frame.
