Hand-coloured original copperplate engraving for Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island printed in London circa 1789 by John Stockdale.
Born in Ireland, painter and engraver, Peter Mazell first exhibited a landscape painting at the Society of Artists in London in 1761, and worked in London from then until 1779. Known for his fine engravings, particularly of natural history subjects, Mazell engraved more than 600 illustrations, including for the the Voyages of Captain Cook, The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, and many works by Thomas Pennant. Ann Latham (1772-1835) was the daughter of English ornithologist John Latham (1740-1837).
This engraving is in fine condition. It has been enhanced with fine later colour at some time since publication.
