Original copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Welsh painter,draughtsman and engraver, Sydenham Teast Edwards (1768-1819) for The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island printed in London circa 1789 by John Stockdale. 

Arthur Phillip came to Australia as captain of the convict ship, HMS Sirius. The first Governor of the British penal colony at Port Jackson in Sydney, Arthur Phillip was appointed Captain General and Commander in Chief over the Territory of New South Wales.

Sydenham Edwards's drawing ability was appreciated by botanist William Curtis who brought him to London to study scientific illustration. He became one of the finest nature illustrators - of birds and animals as well as flowers. Between 1798 and 1814 Edwards contributed nearly all the drawings for Curtis's The Botanical Magazine. Edwards exhibited twelve pictures at the Royal Academy between 1792 and 1814. His drawings and watercolours are today held by the National Museum of Wales, the National Library of Wales, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
