A fine original hand-coloured copperplate engraving from a series engraved for the updated works of Georg-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). Published in Paris circa 1840 by Pourrat Brothers for "Suites a Buffon" by Bernard Germain Etienne de la Ville sur Illon, Comte de Lacepede (1756-1825), who worked with Buffon and compoleted publication of Buffon's 18th century opus, Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere avec la description du cabinet du roi (Natural History, General and Particular), first published by Buffon between 1765 and 1780.
