by Baudin - Peron

Antique engraving of Australian Bandicoot and small Kangaroo, c1827.

Original hand-coloured lithograph published in Germany circa 1827 by lithographer, printer and bookseller, Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787-1862) for Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche (Natural History Gallery of the Animal Kingdom). Brodtmann excelled in his finely detailed, accurately drawn, sympathetic illustrations of animals. He was born in Germany but worked for much of his life in Zurich and Schaffhausen, in Switzerland (and remained in Zurich until he died).

This wonderful group of Australian marsupials is after the earlier engravings by Charles Leseueur, that were published circa 1810 to illustrate Baudin's Voyage of Discovery to Australia. Offical artists on Baudin's voyage were Francois Peron and Louis Freycinet.

Image size is approximately 32 x 44cm (12 x 17 inches).
