Parrots engraving from Goldsmith, Earth and Animated Nature, c1848.

by Goldsmith, Oliver

Parrots. Original hand-coloured steel engraving for Goldsmith’s “A History of the Earth and Animated Nature”, published in London circa 1848 by A. Fullarton & Company.

Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) had intended to translate Pliny's "Natural History" but decided to compile his own work on all that was known about the planets and earth. The first edition of his 8 volume work was published in London in 1774 (the year he died). With its beautiful hand-coloured engraved illustrations it was an instant success, and has subsequently been reissued more than 20 times - well into the 19th century - with illustrations updated as technology changed.

This lovely engraving, published by Fullarton & Co. in London circa 1848, had the fauna beautifully hand-coloured, and the engraved background habitat uncoloured, so that the birds and animals stand out clearly.
