WORLD on Mercator's Projection. Maritime Route to Australia c1874

by Hughes, William

World Mercator Projection. Eastern & Western Maritime Routes to Australia, and the difference of Time at successive Hour-Circles east & west of Greenwich - indicated by meridians drawn at 15 degrees apart. The space between the meridians of 120 degrees and 180 degrees East, is repeated in order to show the relative position of England to Australia, both eastward & westward.

Original antique map by William Hughes, Professor of Geography at the College of Civil Engineers in London. Colour-printed when published by Virtue and Co. in London circa 1874. This is an interesting map with the repetition of Australia on the left and right sides of the map showing clearly its position in the Mercator Projection of the World.

This is a lovely little map measuring 185 x 240mm to its border (7.25 x 9.5 inches). The western side of the left depiction of Australia extends slightly over this border.
