by De l'Isle, Joseph Nicolas

Astronomy. Systeme de Coprenic, de Ticho Brahé, et de Descartes. Solar Systems of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe and René Descartes, by French astronomer Joseph Nicolas de l'Isle, published in Paris by Zacharie Chatelain, c1729. Original copperplate engraving of  early theories of the Solar System by Joseph Nicolas de l'Isle (1688-1768).

Polish Renaissance mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun, not the Earth, at the centre of the universe. Danish nobleman, astronomer, astrologer and alchemist, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) was revered for the accuracy and comprehensiveness of his astronomical and planetary observations which he combined with the philosophies of Ptolomy and the geometry of Copernicus, with the Sun and Moon orbiting Earth, and the remaining planets revolving around the Sun. French philosopher, mathematician and scientist, René Descartes (1596-1650), who was regarded as the father of modern western philosophy, proposed a naturalistic account of the formation of the solar system.

This is a very interesting engraving, and the later hand-colour adds drama to the heavens! It is on fine paper in good condition, with two vertical folds, as issued. Size: 132 x 203mm (approx. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches).
