Geographer to King Louis XIV, Allain Manesson Mallet began his career as a Military Engineer in the army of Louis XIV. He rose to the rank of Sergeant-Major and inspector of fortifications. During 1666-1667 Mallet spent two years in Portugal advising on their fortification. After leaving the military Mallet taught mathematics and geometry at the court of Louis XIV and wrote several books dealing with engineering and science.
